Dear Citizens and Professionals,
The most consequential determinant of wealth creation, business survival, and national productivity in the 21st century is not oil, land, or technology. It is credit – the institutionalized trust that allows value to move before cash does.
Credit is not only the energy source of business. It is the blood, the life wire of an economy in which every citizen is right in the centre, enabling wealth creation, job generation, improved standards of living, and contributing to the national gross domestic product.
Empirical studies by the World Bank and AfDB confirm that economies with credit-to-GDP ratios below 30% remain trapped in informality, while those above 80% achieve industrial scale. Nigeria’s current ratio stands at 13.2%. This structural gap explains why 39.6 million MSMEs struggle for funding, why 73% of corporate failures cite “cash flow,” and why millions of educated Nigerians remain outside the mainstream of economic activity. This is not a banking problem. It is a competence and culture problem.
Critically, the credit economy touches the lives of all citizens regardless of professional, occupational, academic, or social status and background. From the market trader seeking inventory finance, to the salaried worker accessing a mortgage, to the student needing an education loan, to the corporation issuing commercial paper – credit affects everyone, individually as well as corporately.
NICA’S STATUTORY MANDATE: A NATIONAL ECONOMIC INSTRUMENT
To address this structural deficit, the Federal Republic of Nigeria, through the National Assembly, enacted Act No. 26 in 2022, chartering the National Institute of Credit Administration (NICA), chartered as the sole statutory professional authority for the control, supervision, and regulation of credit management profession in Nigeria.
By that Act, NICA is mandated to set and enforce standards for credit management profession and education, ethics, and practice across all sectors of Nigerian Economy; certify and license persons who originate, appraise, monitor, and recover credit granted by the credit granting communities, including banks, DFIs, fintechs, corporates, FMCG, and MDAs, among others; advise Federal and State Governments on policies, frameworks, and legislation required to transition Nigeria from a cash-based to a robust credit economy; and drive national credit culture through research, advocacy, and professional development that includes every citizen.
In summary, NICA was not established to serve a profession alone. It was established to serve an economic transition that affects all Nigerians. Membership of NICA is therefore participation in a national economic assignment open to all citizens.
BENEFIT AVAILABLE FOR JOINING NICA MEMBERSHIP
If you become a member of NICA today, you receive direct access to the knowledge, networks, and standards shaping Nigeria’s credit economy:
- Education and information about the goings-on in the economic transitioning programmes of the Federal government: Timely briefings, policy analyses, and stakeholder sessions on national credit integration, credit and financial inclusion drives, and MSME funding frameworks.
- Mind orientation and life adjustment tips towards a credit culture society: Practical guidance on shifting from cash-based habits to credit-disciplined decision making in personal finance, business operations, and community leadership.
- Information about what it takes to qualify for business and consumer credit either as an individual or corporate: Clear criteria, documentation standards, and creditworthiness checklists used by credit granting communities, conglomerates, and blue-chip companies that produces fast moving consumer goods across the country.
- How to keep your business and personal lifestyle in a manner that respects credit obligations, integrity, honesty, and trust: Codes of conduct, case studies, and mentoring that help you build a track bankable record anywhere, thus building a business environment rooted in a respect for the rule of law.
- The practice of allowing business enterprises to grow and become a national monument instead of “I am my business and my business is me” mentality: Governance frameworks, succession training, and institutionalization support to move from founder-dependent to system-driven enterprises.
The nation’s credit system is the circulatory system of its economy. For too long, it has been run without licensed participants. NICA is the licensing authority. Your membership is your license to participate and lead.
We do not build an economy by asking “Who will lead?” We build it by certifying “Who is qualified to participate.” And because credit affects all, all are invited.
“A nation is only as rich as its credit system is disciplined. NICA is the discipline. And every citizen is a stakeholder.”
Join us. Let history record that when Nigeria chose to become a credit economy, you were among the citizens who made it possible.

THE CONSEQUENCE OF NON-PARTICIPATION
The transition to a credit economy is inevitable. Section 19 of the NICA Act criminalizes the practice of credit management for business by non-members. Compliance is no longer optional. Participation is the only viable choice for anyone who extends, receives, or advises on credit economy business management.
