Lagos, Sept. 27, 2025 – Stakeholders in the tourism sector on Saturday called for renewed investment in Nigeria’s coastal and aquatic tourism as Lagos State marked the 2025 World Tourism Day at Tarkwa Bay Beach.
The annual global event, celebrated every Sept. 27, is designed by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) to foster awareness on the social, cultural, political and economic importance of tourism.
Speaking at the celebration, the Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, said the state was committed to repositioning its waterfronts and beaches as major revenue drivers.
She said Tarkwa Bay was strategically chosen to highlight the vast potential of Lagos’ aquatic endowments, noting that the government would improve infrastructure, security and water transportation to attract investors.
According to her, “Lagos has over 180 kilometres of coastline and countless waterfronts that can be transformed into premium leisure and business destinations. Our goal is to create an enabling environment that will generate jobs and boost the economy.”
The event drew representatives from the Nigeria Association of Tour Operators (NATOP), water transport operators, security agencies and local community leaders.
Mr. Bolaji Mustapha, President of NATOP, said the Tarkwa Bay celebration was symbolic, adding that tour operators were ready to collaborate with government in promoting safe and sustainable aquatic tourism.
“We need reliable ferry services, lifeguards, and clear land policies that will encourage private sector investment. The potential here is immense, but we must address the challenges,” Mustapha said.
Other stakeholders urged government to provide incentives for investors, tackle multiple taxation and improve environmental management around beaches.
