5. Collaboration Between Credit Institutions and NICA: A Catalyst for Economic Development

By NICA Reporter

The National Institute of Credit Administration (NICA) chartered, being a statutory professional body, plays a vital role in promoting a robust credit culture in Nigeria. By collaborating with credit institutions, NICA can help foster economic development and credit industry resilience.

According to the Registrar/Chief Executive Officer of the Institute, Prof. Chris onalo, collaboration is essential as NICA’s expertise in credit management can help credit institutions improve their credit management practices, reducing risks and increasing access to credit for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the country through training for capacity building and ethical leadership.

Onalo, the professor of credit management, stressed that by working together, NICA and credit institutions in the country can develop innovative solutions to reach underserved consumer and business credit populations, promoting financial inclusion and economic growth, and professional effectiveness of those managing credit, all of which lead ultimately to the development of a robust credit infrastructure, including credit bureaus, consumer and business credit guarantee schemes, and other essential components of a healthy credit ecosystem

Such collaboration, Professor Onalo said, is crucial for Nigeria’s economic development. ‘’By working together, we can promote economic growth, enhance financial stability and support credit industry resilience’’, he added.

Every institution represents a synergy. Therefore, bringing multiple synergies together constitutes industry strength and economic resilience. We must all avoid downgrading the beauty of collective strength.  Running a business in silos is super dangerous, just as undermining another institution’s mandate is as dangerous as anti-intellectualism and short-sightedness. We must all embrace the culture of partnership, collaboration, and cooperation in order to attain the much cherished status of ‘’ a great economy’’.

Professor Chris Onalo’s statement is a wisdom that highlights the importance of collaboration in achieving economic resilience, credit industry strength, and a successful corporate operations. When organizations realizes each other’s strength they can leverage and share resources, and mitigate risks. This collective approach can lead to increased innovation, improved efficiency, enhanced risk management, and better decision-making.
