5. Credit  Management: A Career of Chance or a Strategic Choice? – Author: Kingsley U. Onalo, FICA, CICP

5. Credit  Management: A Career of Chance or a Strategic Choice? – Author: Kingsley U. Onalo, FICA, CICP

Many seasoned credit professionals will tell you—they never planned to end up here. They found themselves in credit management not by design, but by circumstance. This “accidental career” phenomenon is not a reflection of its value, but of its invisibility.

We talk often about career planning, but what happens when a critical business function gets overlooked in that planning altogether?

Despite being at the heart of financial stability and customer relationships, credit management is not something most people pursue intentionally.

Why?

  • It is under the radar. Credit management rarely features in university curricula or graduate schemes. Career advisors seldom mention it. It is a field discovered by accident—through finance, customer service, or administrative roles—rather than ambition.
  • Structured pathways are lacking. Unlike accounting or project management, clear pathways does not exist. There are no graduate routes or early talent schemes. Most credit professionals learn on the job, adapting quickly and building expertise the hard way through individual and collective experiences.
  • Education comes late — if at all. Certifications from institutions like NICA are fantastic— but they are typically sought mid-career, often years after the skills were already put to work.

Optimism Meets Scrutiny: The Role of Credit in Grounding Growth

Business owners are, by nature, visionaries. They dream big, forecast boldly, and fuel the engine of innovation. But while optimism is essential for momentum, it can easily outpace reality.

That is where credit professionals, lenders, and investors step in—not to dampen ambition, but to anchor it.

Salient questions:

  • Do assumptions hold up under scrutiny—beyond enthusiasm and pitch decks?
  • Can projected revenue growth withstand market headwinds?
  • Is cash flow resilient enough to fund expansion without overreach?

The goal is not to say “no.” It is to guide businesses toward a financially sustainable “yes.” In that sense, credit management is a steering wheel, rather than a brake pedal. It helps entrepreneurs course-correct, refocus, and build organizations that don’t just survive hype cycles — but last.

Credit is not the enemy of ambition. It is its most pragmatic ally.

Redefining Credit Management: Choice, Visibility, Recognition, and Strategy

  • Let us stop treating credit management as a professional blind spot. With growing emphasis on financial resilience, ESG compliance, and ethical risk management, credit professionals are poised to become even more strategic to business success.

◻Let us give this career path the visibility and structure it deserves. Greater visibility at educational and recruitment levels.

◻Let us open doors earlier and more intentionally.

  • We need formalised onboarding and progression frameworks.

◻Let us make space for those who have already mastered it—often with the recognition they deserve.

  • We need stronger cross-industry collaboration to define what “great” looks like.
  • Let us stop letting talent fall into credit management by accident.

It is time to turn the credit management profession into a career of choice—not chance. Did you choose credit management, or did credit management choose you?
