The National Institute of Credit Administration (NICA), chartered, continues to play a key role in Nigeria’s economic development, particularly in shaping a strong and sustainable credit economy. As the country pursues inclusive growth and financial stability, the importance of efficient, effective, credit economy management has become increasingly evident.
Over the years, NICA has distinguished itself as a leading professional body, promoting and driving excellence in an economy rooted in credit business transactions; strengthening the foundation of Nigeria’s financial system. Its impact is reflected in recent assessments based on internal evaluations, industry reports, and expert insights (2023), which show consistently strong performance across key areas. The Institute recorded a score of 8 out of 10 in its advocacy for a credit economy system, compared to 6 by peer institutions, while its impact on credit and financial inclusion stands at an impressive 9 out of 10, significantly ahead of others.
In addition, NICA continues to demonstrate strength in professional development and advocacy standards, scoring 8 and 7 respectively, alongside a solid contribution to national economic growth. These indicators highlight the Institute’s growing influence and its commitment to setting high standards within Nigeria’s credit ecosystem.
Beyond these ratings, NICA’s contributions translate into measurable economic outcomes. Credit and financial inclusion in Nigeria has expanded significantly, with about 89.4 million adults now included in the formal financial system, according to the Central Bank of Nigeria. Access to credit for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises has also improved, recording a 23 percent increase as reported by Enhancing Financial Innovation & Access. This progress has supported broader economic performance, including a GDP growth rate of 3.1 percent based on data from the World Bank, as well as the creation of approximately 15.6 million jobs, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.
At the core of these achievements is the recognition that a well-functioning credit economy is essential to national development. By promoting credit discipline, enhancing credit risk management practices, and fostering professional credit management integrity, NICA continues to strengthen trust and efficiency within the credit and financial system. This, in turn, supports businesses, empowers individuals, and stimulates economic activity across multiple sectors.
NICA remains highly relevant, not only in its mandate of controlling, supervising and regulating credit management profession in Nigeria, but in measurable impact. As Nigeria continues to navigate its development path, the Institute stands as a critical partner in advancing credit and financial inclusion, expanding access to credit, and building a resilient, credit-driven economy that works for all.
