1. The Critical Role of Credit and Business Information in Determining Creditworthiness of companies in Nigeria By: Chris Onalo

Accurate credit and business information are essential in determining creditworthiness, enabling credit grantors or providers to make informed decisions. Credit bureaus and reporting agencies play a vital role in providing this information, which helps to assess credit risk and evaluate an individual’s or business’s credit history,  conscientiousness, payment behavior, and internal locus of  control to determine a company’s creditworthiness. The credit approval or denial decisions are profoundly based on this comprehensive view of creditworthiness factors. When accurately provided and competently analyzed, credit and business information promotes financial stability, fosters a stable financial system. By encouraging responsible credit transactions and management practices, easily available credit and business information facilitates and promotes access to credit for creditworthy individuals and businesses, supporting economic growth and development.

The availability of credit and business Information, which in most cases, are supplied by reliable specialist companies, ensures that such company and consumer credit reports are accurate, up-to-date, and comprehensive, with the objective of delivering credit scoring transparency with a clear methodologies, while maintaining the integrity of the information against errors, inaccuracies, and fraud. Credit management professionals and other stakeholders are now prioritizing accessibility, accuracy and integrity of credit and business information.

Fortunately, the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC)’s role has been spotted to be vitally supportive of corporate creditworthiness analysis. The Corporate Affairs Commission has been advised to play this vital role of promoting sound credit management system in Nigeria’s economy. As the custodian of company information, the CAC provides critical data that supports corporate creditworthiness analysis and approval decisions.

Business information is crucial for creditworthiness evaluation, monitoring and recovery. The CAC maintains a comprehensive database of registered companies, providing accurate information on company profiles, directors, shareholders, and investors.

These information are key to a healthy credit risk assessment.  By providing access to company information, the CAC is enabling creditors to properly assess credit risk, making informed decisions about credit facilities that they intend to grant or have granted to their customers. In managing credit, transparency and accountability are observed. The CAC’s role in this regard will promote transparency and accountability in credit business dealings in Nigeria, thus, fostering the culture of creditworthiness and responsible management of the nation’s credit business portfolio.

Therefore, CAC is certainly a major contributor to Nigeria’s quest for a robust credit ecosystem.  By supporting corporate creditworthiness analysis, and merit-based credit approval decisions, CAC is supporting a stable and efficient Nigerian credit market, promoting economic growth and development.

Nigeria’s credit management professionals expect that the CAC’s role in supporting corporate creditworthiness analysis is critical to promoting a sound credit management system in the economy. They look forward to continuing collaboration with relevant stakeholders to enhance credit risk assessment, promote credit culture and creditworthiness, with support for economic development.
