The leadership era of Dr. Adaora Umeoji, FICA, Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Zenith Bank Plc, is fast becoming a defining chapter in Nigeria’s banking and credit evolution.
Having assumed office in June 2024 as the first female CEO in the bank’s history, succeeding industry titan Jim Ovia, Dr. Umeoji stepped into one of the most demanding roles in Nigeria’s financial system. Less than two years later, her tenure is marked not only by record profitability but also by expanding influence across domestic and international markets, particularly in export financing.
Zenith Bank’s full year 2024 results reflect extraordinary growth. Gross earnings surged by 86 percent, driven by a 138 percent rise in interest income and disciplined loan book expansion. Profit before tax climbed to N1.3 trillion, while profit after tax exceeded N1 trillion, marking a 52.5 percent year on year increase. Total assets rose approximately 47 percent to N30 trillion, with customer deposits reaching N22 trillion, a strong vote of confidence from investors and depositors alike. In dollar terms, the bank delivered 671 million dollars in profit in 2024, reinforcing its position among Africa’s most profitable financial institutions.

Momentum continued into 2025. First quarter profit stood at 194.4 million dollars, with total assets crossing 20 billion dollars. By September 2025, total assets had increased further to N31.18 trillion, deposits climbed to N23.69 trillion, and gross earnings rose to N3.37 trillion. These figures underscore the bank’s strengthened intermediation capacity, deeper liquidity buffers, and enhanced ability to fund productive sectors of the economy.
Beyond balance sheet growth, Zenith Bank has emerged as the undisputed leader in export financing. Under Dr. Adaora Umeoji’s stewardship, the bank accounted for 32.31 percent of all NXP transactions nationwide in 2025, the highest share among 30 commercial banks. The NXP form remains central to export documentation and repatriation of foreign earnings, making leadership in this segment a strong indicator of export finance capacity.
According to the Nigerian Export Promotion Council, Nigeria’s non-oil exports reached a record 6.1 billion dollars in 2025, underscoring accelerating diversification away from oil dependence. Zenith Bank’s commanding participation signals strategic alignment with national economic priorities by facilitating trade finance, foreign exchange inflows, and cross border transactions for exporters across agriculture, manufacturing, and solid minerals. As diversification gains momentum, the bank continues to power exporters across sectors.
Complementing its domestic strength, Zenith Bank expanded its international footprint into Paris, France, a move designed to deepen cross border trade relationships and broaden access to global capital markets. This expansion strengthens correspondent banking relationships, enhances foreign currency liquidity channels, and supports exporters seeking access to European markets.
Umeoji’s leadership extends beyond profitability and market share. Her executive education at globally respected institutions including Harvard Business School, Wharton School, MIT Sloan School of Management, and Columbia Business School reflects deliberate preparation for global financial leadership. Her commitment to education support, healthcare initiatives, and community development further reinforces the principle that sustainable banking must integrate profitability with purpose.
As Nigeria navigates macroeconomic realignment and a shifting global trade environment, institutions capable of combining capital strength with strategic clarity will shape the nation’s trajectory. Under Dr. Adaora Umeoji, FICA, Zenith Bank is not merely maintaining its legacy, it is expanding it. With record earnings, strengthened assets, and a commanding 32.31 percent share of export financing transactions, the bank stands firmly at the forefront of Nigeria’s credit driven diversification agenda.
